Madis Specialty Coffee and Roastery, Philly, PA (10/10) | July 28, 2024 - Structural Estimation Camp Special
If I were living in Philly,
I would be a regular at Madis.
On the first day of the structural estimation summer camp, I woke up early to go to the Madis Coffee Shop to study and complete some readings before the camp started. I do these trips at every conference, trip with friends, or summer school. Trying to study/work in one of the local coffee shops. But this one makes me feel more than that because this time I feel like I am living one possible path.
While deciding which PhD program to start, I was between UC, Irvine, Drexel University in Philly, and Kelley, where I am right now… Drexel was one of the first schools I got into. Michelle Lowry from Drexel was a great advisor option, only a 1.5-hour train ride from New York, a big city compared to other options… I ended up in the Kelley School of Business. Still, this stayed as one of those points left as major life points. I think the other one was a college choice. I always thought about how I would turn out if I went to Istanbul, how I would turn out if I went to one of those private universities, which might provide me with better PhD options, but make me someone way different than who I am today. While sitting in Madis Coffee shop, I was thinking about what my life would be like in this city. I texted about the coffee shop to my dearest friend, Yong Seok Kim. The coffee shop has pour-over and great pastries.
Super friendly and knowledgeable barista was the cherry on the top. Yes, Madis is one of those coffee shops make you choose coffee beans of your pour over. I do not exactly remember what I picked, but the ones with dark chocolate notes - as usual. Additional to pain de chocolate, they had chocolate croissant in a morning I would prefer chocolate croissant over pain de chocolate :)
Including interior design, and their mugs; Madis was perfect spot for studying. While having my coffee and breakfast there, I did not know that at the end of this summer camp I will have to fly Indiana from New York...
For my 5 am flight, I decided to spend the night at the airport. I was planning to work anyway. One can call it stupidity, and one can call it being young. In this case, I will call it being lucky. Around 11 am, I got a text from Frontier Airlines saying that my 5 am flight had been cancelled because of weather. No hotel, no food, no other option for the next day... I can get a refund or reschedule.
With quick operations management, I rescheduled my flight to New York! That was the night I took Uber to Flixbus at 2 am under the bridge, my first time in New York, getting another Uber to the airport at 4 am, and catching my flight at 6 am in LaGuardia Airport... I ended up being home earlier than expected...
